A letter from Nina Laing, RN, BSN, CCM

Published 09/22/2024

Nina M. Laing RN, BSN, CCMDear South County Community:

Healthcare’s complexities continue to challenge hospitals, and South County Health is no exception. Yet, in my 37 years here, I’ve seen our unwavering commitment to high-quality care.

I will continue to support our leadership and our collective mission to provide the highest quality care for the community we proudly serve.

As someone who has delivered my children here, entrusted the care of close family members and even witnessed loved ones treated with dignity in their final moments, I know firsthand the dedication of our staff members. On my commute to work, I intentionally drive past other hospitals on my way to South County Health, because this place is more than just a job—it’s my family.

I started in 1987 as a nurse, spent 20 years working in the ICU, and now, as Director of Case Management, I ensure smooth transitions for patients and their families. Over the years, I’ve witnessed countless examples of compassion and excellence, from providers staying at bedsides during critical moments to staff members going above and beyond, day after day.

Criticism can be hurtful, especially when it questions the quality of care we provide, whether intentional or not. To suggest that South County Health is not providing high-quality care is both untrue and an attack on the unwavering commitment that so many staff members have made at South County Health to provide the highest quality of care in the safest manner possible. This is reflected in our numerous national recognitions on quality and safety, however, I believe the best way to respond is by sharing the stories of the care we've all experienced and delivered. From my mother Joyce’s surgery and my grandchildren's births at South County Hospital, to the outpouring of support from providers and staff when my brother Donnie passed away, I’ve seen South County Health’s staff consistently demonstrate emotional investment and exemplary care.

I would encourage community members to speak up and discuss the positive stories they have experienced and not let the negative chatter dominate all of the great things being done at South County Health.

Sincerely,

Nina M. Laing RN, BSN, CCM
