Who Should Be Vaccinated?
The state Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control recommend an annual flu vaccination for everyone, in particular pregnant women; those 65 years and older; and those with long-term or chronic health problems such as asthma, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, diabetes or anemia. Adults with weakened immune systems due to cancer or cancer treatment, healthcare workers, residents of nursing homes or long-term care facilities and caregivers for children age six months or younger should also be vaccinated.
What Does It Cost?
Individuals insured by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island, Medicare, Medicaid, Tufts, United Healthcare and Tricare must bring proof of health insurance coverage to receive a free vaccination. For those with other insurance plans, check with your carrier to see if the vaccine at a public clinic is covered. For all others the cost is $20. Checks or cash are accepted.
