South County Health Cancer CenterMessage to the Community regarding South County Health Cancer Center

As the primary health system for residents of Southern Rhode Island, South County Health remains committed to providing and growing comprehensive cancer care for the residents of Washington County and beyond. This includes the same elements of medical, radiation, and surgical oncology, along with the supportive and ancillary services, we have always offered, and is critical to South County Health’s mission of being Rhode Island’s Most Trusted Health Partner.

At South County Health, we believe it is imperative for patients to have access to comprehensive cancer care in a community-based setting. Community-based care has been shown to be more personalized and has the ability to improve quality outcomes. That is why we have recently invested over $12 million in enhancing cancer care on our Wakefield campus and will soon be investing approximately $4 million in the development of a comprehensive breast health center.

We understand the community’s concern regarding the news of the resignations of Dr. Taber, Dr. Smythe, and Dr. Danish from employment with South County Medical Group effective in early- to mid-October. Dr. Seidler, however, has expressed his intent to remain employed by South County Medical Group and continue providing exceptional care to the community.

We also want to assure the community that South County Health has hired three replacement hematology-oncology physicians for coverage to ensure patients have continuity of care in the same safe and high-quality manner they have come to expect at South County Health. Dr. Alarcon Velasco, Dr. Lee, and Dr. McKinney will be joining South County Health’s Cancer Center by early- to mid-October. These outstanding physicians will bring exceptional credentials and talent to our cancer program.

Please know, it remains our top priority to ensure patients continue to receive the care that they need, and South County Health is taking assertive steps to make this transition as seamless as possible.
