On October 27, Sarah Kettle, RN, was recognized with a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. As part of the DAISY tradition, Sarah received a bouquet of daisies, A Healer’s Touch statuette, and a platter of cinnamon buns to share with her unit.
Anitra Galmore, Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer/Chief Operating Officer, presented the award, saying “We all know how important compassion is to what we do as nurses. Sarah, that compassion is exactly what your patient felt, and what moved them to nominate you. We are so pleased to have you at South County Health. You truly embody our guiding values.”
Sarah, who has been a nurse at South County Health since December of 2021, was nominated by a patient who says:
“I was admitted to South County Hospital recently with kidney stones. As you all would know, this is typically an intense experience.
When I made it to a room, Sarah was the first person to meet and greet me. She immediately put me at ease, and I knew I would be well taken care of. She consistently shows great listening skills and a heart, and skills of compassion and caring. She was a person as well as a nurse – meaning she listened intently and saw both my physical and emotional needs during my stay.
Being that doors are typically open, I also noticed Sarah dealing with a patient traveling the halls with what seemed to be clear signs of dementia. Sarah was amazingly effective in dealing with this person, who was often uncooperative.
I feel that Sarah is most deserving of recognition for the true patient-centered, kind, compassionate care that she gives. Thank you so much for meeting my needs and making me feel safe and well cared for.”
South County Health is delighted to honor Sarah with a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses and would also like to acknowledge the rest of the nominees for this recognition:

- Diane DiSalvo, RN, Orthopedics
- Allison Erben, RN, Surgical Services
- Lydia McGunagle, RN, Medical Surgery

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. His family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided and one of the goals they set in creating a Foundation was to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere who make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people by the super-human work they do every day.
Cinnamon rolls were a favorite of Patrick’s during his illness. The Barnes Family asks that whenever and wherever nurses smell that wonderful cinnamon aroma, they stop for a moment and think about how special they are.
To nominate a nurse for the DAISY Award, patients, visitors, nurses, physicians, or colleagues may complete and submit the form on our website.
