WAKEFIELD RI (10/11/2023) — South County Health’s Radiation Therapy program was recently awarded a three-year accreditation from The American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO). South County Health is one of only approximately 300 practices nationwide to receive this prestigious accreditation.
ACRO accreditation is a voluntary process in which professional peers use identified standards indicative of a quality practice, and an audit is conducted to assure that these standards are followed. The accreditation occurs in South County Health’s first year of eligibility, as they recently acquired the Radiation Therapy facility at 142 Kenyon Avenue in Wakefield and reopened in spring of 2022, providing services to patients of South County Health and patients referred from other community providers.

The national recognition comes on the heels of South County Health’s Cancer Center receiving a three-year accreditation from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (CoC) in February 2023.
Additionally, at the annual ACRO conference last Spring, Elizabeth Tolmie, Administrative Director, South County Medical Group, was presented with the 2023 ACRO SEAL (Sharing Excellence Among Leaders) award.
Radiation oncology (radiation therapy) is the targeted use of high-energy radiation to treat cancer. A radiation oncologist may use radiation to treat a tumor or to relieve a cancer patient’s pain. The development of a radiation therapy plan is a detailed, precise process that requires coordination among physicians, physicists and radiation therapists to ensure safety and effectiveness of treatment.

About South County Health Radiation Therapy
In 2022, South County Health became the sole owner or South County Health Radiation Therapy, located on the hospital campus in Wakefield. Reopening in Spring 2022 after months of renovations and technology upgrades, including the installation of the new state-of-the-art Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerator. South County Health is one of only five radiation therapy facilities in Rhode Island, making this form of treatment available to patients in southern Rhode Island.
