At South County Health, we take pride in fostering professional growth and providing opportunities for our team members to develop rewarding careers in healthcare. Abbie Dobrowolski’s journey is a testament to this, as she has progressed from a patient safety sitter to a nursing assistant in the float pool—all while pursuing further education and professional development.
"I started at South County Health in August 2023 as a per diem patient safety sitter. After a few months in this role, I applied for a part-time position in patient transport. Spending a year in this role allowed me to get to know the staff and the hospital while fostering my interest in a more hands-on patient care role.
When I learned about the CNA course that SCH was sponsoring, I jumped at the opportunity. I completed my certification at 911Programs and soon after, I transitioned into a full-time nursing assistant role in the float pool."
Guidance and Mentorship: A Supportive Community
"Many people at the hospital have been integral to my development at South County Health. Coworkers from all departments—including the Emergency Department, inpatient floors, diagnostic testing, and surgical suites—have taken the time to teach me about patient care techniques, professionalism, and skill-based tasks.

If I had to name one mentor, it would be Alyssa Marciniak (pictured, left), the current Director of Emergency Services. She has gone above and beyond to support me in pursuing my goals and building my critical care skills so I can provide the best possible patient care within my scope of practice."
SCH Benefits: Investing in Career Growth
"South County Health’s sponsorship of the nursing assistant course was a huge benefit to me. It provided the opportunity to obtain my CNA license and, upon graduation, led to a full-time position. This kind of support has been invaluable in helping me grow professionally."
Looking Ahead: Future Goals and Aspirations
"To further my personal and professional development, I have enlisted in the Rhode Island Army National Guard and will be training as a combat medic. My goal is to continue my education and obtain my BSN, all while maintaining employment at South County Health."
Education and Certifications: Laying the Foundation for Success
"I hold an associate’s degree in applied science, which has given me a strong foundation in anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology. This education has fueled my passion for understanding the human body and how to care for it.
Additionally, I have held a Therapeutic Massage license through the Rhode Island Department of Health for the last five years. This background has enhanced my skills in patient care, communication, and safety."
Why I Choose South County Health
"The family-oriented environment has been the key reason I stay at South County Health. I love my coworkers and look forward to seeing them each shift. There is a strong sense of teamwork and supportive camaraderie that makes SCH a special place to work."
Advice for Those Considering a Similar Path
"Take the time to figure out a "big picture future" that fulfills you. Then, take it one step at a time, knowing that each small step brings you closer to your goal. Your body follows your mind, so maintaining a good attitude and mental resilience is essential—especially in a field where we encounter challenging situations."
How SCH Can Continue to Support My Growth
"South County Health has already provided so much in helping me reach my goals. By facilitating training and offering new experiences, SCH continues to provide immense support."
Life Outside of Work: Staying Active and Connected
"When I’m not at work, I love spending time with friends, seeing comedy shows, and going to the gym. Hiking with my dog, Luna, and attending church are also important to me. I have an older sister and brother and feel fortunate to still spend quality time with my parents."
Looking Ahead: A Temporary Goodbye, but Not for Long
"I will miss the friends I have made while I am away training for this new chapter, and I look forward to continuing my education and reconnecting with this community upon my return!"
