Birnbaum’s perspective is shaped by five decades of health care experience – including leadership positions at Yale School of Medicine and at New York City’s Montefiore Medical Center – as well as long-term residency in Washington County. He and Arlene first arrived as summer visitors in 1962 and have lived in Charlestown since 1985.
“As our health care system continues to shift away from fee-for-service medicine and toward a reimbursement and care deliver y system based on quality and successful population health management, hospitals like ours will play an even more pivotal role in delivery of essential services,” he notes. “South County Hospital’s consistently high quality and team-based approach position us well for the future. Our Community Cancer Center, with its emphasis on interdisciplinary care, patient and family education, and excellent care experiences, further strengthens our ability to care for our community.”
Enhancing the patient care experience, says Birnbaum, is ultimately the most compelling aspect of the project. “What Arlene and I are most thrilled about is that our Community Cancer Center will bring health care professionals to the patient, not the other way around.”
